About Elekta

Elekta is a human care company pioneering significant innovations and clinical solutions for treating cancer and brain disorders. The company develops sophisticated, state-of-the-art tools and treatment planning systems for radiation therapy, radiosurgery and brachytherapy, as well as workflow enhancing software systems across the spectrum of cancer care. Stretching the boundaries of science and technology, providing intelligent and resource-efficient solutions that offer confidence to both healthcare providers and patients, Elekta aims to improve, prolong and even save patient lives. Today, Elekta solutions in oncology and neurosurgery are used in more than 6000 hospitals worldwide.

The System Physics team is responsible for physics aspects of linear accelerator-based solutions within the engineering organization of Elekta’s Linac Business Line, including system engineering responsibilities for quality assurance and set-to-work.

The successful applicant for this Principal Physicist role will take part in the evolution of image-guided radiotherapy systems by leading physics aspects of the development of Elekta’s linear accelerator solutions. The position will involve influencing the engineering design and other physics aspects of the product lifecycle (such as manufacturing and service activities), and developing physics test program strategies and plans, to ensure product solutions meet physics performance and compliance specifications. The role will include managing physics activities involving internal and external stakeholders, such as suppliers and outsourcing partners.

The role will require experience of radiotherapy linacs and system-level knowledge, with expertise in radiation physics and dosimetry, physics QA, linac commissioning and acceptance. The candidate will be expected to demonstrate expertise also in one or several of the following areas: Monte Carlo simulations and other physics modelling techniques, control systems for experiments, scientific programming (e.g. Matlab), accelerator physics and X-ray imaging. A key requisite of the role is a system-level approach to problem-solving, therefore the successful candidate will need to have an understanding of system engineering principles. Another key requisite is the ability to demonstrate effective technical leadership. The role will also require a good understanding of the principles of the engineering design and verification processes, as well as experience of working in a process-oriented and regulated environment. Applied knowledge of medical device international and national regulatory standards would be an advantage. Experience of working according to LEAN-Agile practices would also be an advantage.

In this role, the successful applicant will be expected to interact successfully with multi-disciplinary teams in various global locations, therefore a collaborative and adaptable working style will be necessary, as well as the ability to drive and influence technical discussions. The work will offer interaction with clinics, research institutions and commercial organizations inside and outside of the UK, therefore requiring the ability to communicate professionally and effectively, including presenting in public. Excellent planning and organizational skills, as well as a strong sense of accountability when working as part of a team, are also essential for this role.

Candidates should have at least a degree in physics, radiation physics, medical physics, accelerator physics, or closely related discipline, with evidence of experience of applied radiation physics either in a research, industrial or clinical environment. Postgraduate and/or clinical qualifications would be desirable.
