Project title: Superconductivity and magnetism in graphene-based Moire superlattices.

Agency FAPESP – The Thematic Project “Emergent Phenomena in Reduced Dimension Systems” supported by FAPESP (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo), has a vacancy for a postdoctoral position at the “Gleb Wataghin” Institute of Physics – IFGW, the State University of Campinas-UNICAMP in São Paulo-Brazil.

The Thematic Project aims to explore the collective behaviour of interacting electrons in solids leading to the emergence of complex phenomena such as superconductivity, complex magnetic and ferroelectric orderings, metal-insulator transitions, non-Fermi-liquid behaviour, topologically protected edge and/or surface states, etc. All these phenomena are governed by non-trivial microscopic parameters that are very hard to determine experimentally and/or to model theoretically. Within the present project, our goal is to investigate the evolution of these emergent phenomena in systems with reduced dimensionality, which included small size systems (nanoparticle, nanowires, etc) and macroscopic objects with the low-dimensional (2D, 1D) behaviour.

The selected candidate will develop experimental studies of magnetic and electrical transport properties of graphene multilayers with and without of Moiré super-lattices aiming to clarify a role of the layer stacking in the occurrence of superconductivity, magnetism, metal-insulator transition and quantum Hall effect in these materials. The work will be done at the Materials and Devices Laboratory (LMD) of the Department of Applied Physics (DFA) at the IFGW/UNICAMP, led by Prof. Dr Yakov Kopelevich.

Requirements and desired skills for this postdoctoral position:

  • PhD degree in physics, with title acquired in the last five years.
  • Experience in cryogenics, sample preparation and characterization of poly/mono crystalline and nanomaterials, electrical transport (resistivity, Hall effect, current-voltage characteristics, magnetoresistance, etc) and magnetization measurements using commercial cryostats.
  • Being highly motivated, able to work independently and supervize/co-supervize graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Have publications in journals and conferences on topics related to this project.

Applicants must submit the following documents (PDF format) up to 15 January 2021 to Prof. Dr Yakov Kopelevich (kopel@ifi.unicamp.br), one of the principal researchers of this Thematic Project:

  • Letter explaining reasons for interest in this postdoctoral scholarship.
  • Updated curriculum vitae.
  • Two letters of recommendation.

This vacancy is open to Brazilians and foreigners. The selected candidate will receive a postdoc FAPESP scholarship of R$ 7.373,10 (local currency) monthly as well as the technical reserve fund. The technical reserve is equivalent to 15% of the annual amount of the scholarship, and its purpose is to provide resources to expenses directly related to scientific research and some unforeseen expenses.
