Helping you train to teach physics

As a leading scientific membership society, one of our core aims is to secure a flourishing future for physics.

To help us achieve this, we’re offering exceptional physics and engineering graduates £26,000 tax-free funding to teach and inspire the next generation.

No single day in the classroom is the same. As a physics teacher, you’ll think on your feet and use your creativity to address new challenges and answer unique questions. You’ll help your students to better understand the world around them, and give them the knowledge and confidence to pursue physics to A-level and beyond.

What’s in it for you?

In addition to £26,000 tax-free funding and you’ll become a part of our community of scholars with access to:

  • Free IOP membership throughout the teacher training year including access to Physics World publication, our exclusive Career Development Hub and member-led local branches and special interests groups.
  • Professional development opportunities with support from IOP Educational teams across the UK as well as access to online CPD events and virtual networking opportunities with other scholars throughout the training year.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for graduates with at least a 2.1 degree in physics or a related subject such as engineering or mathematics. Our scholarships will be awarded to the very best individuals who impress us with their academic record, physics subject knowledge and commitment to teaching.

How to apply

All applications are made online here.

Please read our eligibility criteria thoroughly before making your application.

If your online application is shortlisted, it will be reviewed by a panel of IOP staff including experienced physics teachers. You will also be asked to complete a further online subject knowledge test based on school-level physics up to and including A-level. Successfully passing this test, the receipt of a suitable reference and gaining a recommendation from the shortlisting panel will lead to a scholarship offer.

The IOP reserves the right to request candidates attend an online interview should the panel deem this necessary.

Application deadline

“The access to extra CPD tailored to my subject and live sessions for help and advice were the main benefit of joining the scholarship. It meant becoming part of a team of people who are teaching for the same reasons. They share the same crazy fascination and with that crazy fascination comes crazy ideas for lesson activities. If you’re planning a lesson, the chances are there’s a fun activity out there waiting for you.” Stephanie, IOP Scholar
