Summary

The Chemical, Biological and Radiological Division (CBR) of Dstl provides an integrated Chemistry, Biology, Radiation and Medical Sciences capability, delivering technical services, scientific research, advice and consultancy, and an emergency response capability in support of UK defence and security.

If so, this is an exciting opportunity for an individual keen to apply their knowledge and skills to supervise radiation related survey work. We want to recruit someone with experience in health physics, radiation protection, environmental science or contaminated land to join our Radiation Sciences Group and provide routine survey and monitoring for radiological and workplace hazards to our military and civilian customers.

Job description

We will build on your skills and knowledge to enable you to:

  • Conduct radiological surveys in land and marine environments to support an ongoing environmental monitoring programme on Ministry of Defence sites.
  • Other work includes monitoring and categorisation of radiological material, building surveys and radiological desk studies.

Technical

  • Planning and preparing all aspects of radiological surveys and other health physics work covering safety, technical and quality requirements in collaboration with Project Teams.
  • Researching and writing summary reports for land quality studies and following surveys.
  • Maintaining land survey equipment and supplies.
  • Encouraging the continual improvement of quality, service and technical standards.
  • Coaching others to develop technical excellence and build resilience.
  • Supporting wider Group activities to ensure operational efficiency.

Emergency Response

  • Following a period of training, the successful candidate will provide on call support to the MOD Nuclear Emergency Monitoring Organisation, participate in exercises as a designated Classified Radiation Worker and Monitoring Controller.

Professional development
Professional development will include achieving and maintaining Dstl RPA Body appointment as a Health Physics Support Technician.

Responsibilities

We’re looking for someone:

  • Who has experience in working in radiation protection.
  • Able to work collaboratively to plan and embed technical quality and safety into fieldwork.
  • Capable of undertaking a variety of health physics tasks in various locations.
  • With the ability to develop colleague’s technical skills to help them work safely and efficiently.

Important information

This role will require full UK security clearance and you should have resided in the UK for the past five years.

Licences

Full driving license. The role will be based at the Alverstoke site but will regularly require travel to/working at remote customer sites, where public transport may not be available.

Qualifications

City & Guilds Radiation Safety Practice Stage 2 or NVQ equivalent and/or a related degree or qualification such as environmental, earth or geo sciences.

  • Experience of conducting environmental surveys and monitoring techniques or experience of contaminated land work either practically or preparation of environmental impact assessments or similar.
  • Demonstrate a good working knowledge/understanding of the legislative requirements associated with nuclear and/or radiation operations (e.g. IRR17, EPR16 and EPA).
