A vacancy exists in the management team of the UK Research Centre in NDE (RCNDE, www.rcnde.ac.uk) for a Deputy Director. This approximately 20% part-time role is to work alongside the RCNDE Director in terms of managerial oversight of the centre, with specific responsibility for the centre’s research strategy for NDE 4.0. This is expected to be a principal RCNDE activity in the future, including both the NDE input to Industry 4.0 and the use of Industry 4.0 technologies to enhance NDE capability, thus creating benefit via reduced risk and cost. The role is broad in scope in that it encompasses the full range of technologies of the centre, as well as the full membership. The Deputy Director will be in a strong position to take over as RCNDE Director in the future, subject to appropriate RCNDE Board consideration.

The role is part of the RCNDE Management Team comprising the following:

Role Current incumbent Part-time
Director Prof. Robert Smith 0.2–0.3
Deputy Director   0.2
Research Director Prof. Paul Wilcox 0.1
Industry Director and Managing Director of NDEvR Mr Peter Thayer 0.6–0.7
Technology Director Dr Colin Brett 0.1
Centre Manager Ms Maria Arias

Person specification

The successful applicant will have built up significant (at least 10 years desirable) experience in the field of non-destructive evaluation, or a related field, in a combination of industry/public sector and academia, preferably covering several industry sectors. He/she will have leadership experience such as heading up a research or development team. Evidence of working in, or preferably leading, projects with multiple partners with different aims and drivers will be advantageous.

Academic qualifications should be equivalent to a PhD in a related subject. Evidence of publications, written proposals and presentations at international conferences, as well as Chartered status would all be advantageous. Involvement in and membership of a professional engineering institute is an advantage, as is any involvement with RCNDE. The successful candidate will be someone who is willing to get out into industry and engage with current and potential RCNDE members, as well as spreading the word about the RCNDE strategy.

Working locations

Working from home is possible for most of the role but face-to-face meetings, such as Board meetings, which have generally been held three times a year, may require travel to different parts of the UK and could involve several days in a single week. In addition, attendance, networking and the giving of RCNDE presentations at national and international events, is a requirement of the role.

Funding route

There are various options for funding the 20% part-time Deputy Director role and the management team is happy to discuss arrangements to suit a candidate’s circumstances, whether via a secondment from an employer or directly with an individual.
