Job type: Permanent Full Time

Location: Culham, Oxfordshire

Salary: £70,000–£75,000 per annum + excellent benefits including outstanding pension scheme

Closing date: 30 November 2020

Are you an experienced operational engineering manager with the ability to think strategically? Do you have a keen interest in the future of the world’s energy supplies? Do you have a passion for providing inspired and inclusive leadership at the cutting edge of science and technology?

If so, we have an excellent opportunity for an operational engineering manager to lead the MAST-U Operations department within the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). MAST-U (Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak – Upgraded) is one of two fusion devices operated by UKAEA. MAST-U has been specifically constructed to study exhaust physics in different divertor configurations and, as such, is a world leader. The physics from MAST-U will influence the design of future energy producing tokamaks such as DEMO and STEP.

The MAST-U Operations Department Manager will lead and manage the team that delivers reliable operations and oversees the strategic direction for the facility, to meet UKAEA`s current and future programmes.

With a high profile and direct interaction with other Senior Managers, the Directorate, Customers and Stakeholders, the jobholder needs a broad understanding of the organisation, its strategy and priorities and the wider interactions with the fusion and high technology communities including funding bodies.

Key accountabilities include

  • Providing robust and enthused leadership for the management of the MAST-U Operations Department, including permanent staff and contractors.
  • Management of the day to day operation of MAST Upgrade to produce world-leading scientific results and meet the operational milestones.
  • Delivering department assigned commitments to quality, schedule, and cost.
  • Providing effective communications to all persons directly and indirectly involved with MAST-U Operations within and from outside the department.
  • Be the champion for Quality, Safety, Health and Environment (QSHE) and Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) for the department and for the wider organisation.

At UKAEA we strive to make everyone feel welcome and fully supported. We welcome applications from under-represented groups, particular from individuals from black and other ethnic minority backgrounds, including nationality and citizenship, people with disabilities, (visible and hidden) and women. Our Inclusion Ambassadors are actively promoting and advancing diversity and inclusion in the organisation to help make our organisation an employer of choice. UKAEA has a graded career structure and our mentoring scheme will enable you to reach your true potential.

The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research. Following recent UK funding, two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built. The culture at UKAEA promotes research, innovation and leading edge technological excellence, whilst investing in people.
