PhD in the Fabrication of Hybrid Semiconductor Devices

Description: Hybrid devices consist of an inorganic semiconductor in close proximity to an organic light emitting material.  The semiconductor can be electrically or optically excited and energy can be transferred to the organic emitter either radiatively or non-radiatively via Förster transfer. Previous work has shown that Förster transfer can be a very efficient process producing a twenty-fold increase in emission. However, the mechanisms involved are not fully understood partly because work to date has involved GaN based quantum wells (QWs) which have properties which can mask the Förster process. This project will utilise GaAs-based QWs and quantum dot structures which are easier to process and relatively free of the localisation processes that occur in GaN  based QWs. Initially we will investigate Förster transfer between GaAs/AlGaAs QWs and PCPDTBT a polymer whose absorption overlaps with emission from the QWs around 750 nm and In(Ga)As/GaAs QWs and QDs with J-aggregate dyes emitting between 900-1300 nm. The inorganic semiconductors will be grown, processed into devices and tested at IC (high quality structures will also be produced at  FORTH, one of the collaborating  institutions). The student will therfore gain experience in epitaxial growth,  processing of organic devices, electro- and photoluminescence as well as time resolved PL.

Due to the work to be carried out candidates should have a sound knowledge of the optical properties of semiconductors
