The United States Particle Accelerator School (USPAS) serves the national interest by developing the workforce of students, researchers, and practitioners in the theory and practice of accelerator and particle beam science, engineering and applications through intense, structured program sessions of graduate-level academic courses held in partnership with major research universities. USPAS courses cover a broad range of specialized courses in accelerator science and technology that also serve to recruit promising individuals into the field.
The USPAS Collaboration is comprised of member laboratories (8) and universities (2) that share a joint commitment to develop, sustain, and improve the workforce that supports innovative and applied accelerator science, technology and accelerator for the United States of America. The mission of the collaboration is to support the programs of the USPAS: (1) by providing their staff and faculty to act as instructors in USPAS courses, (2) by covering all costs for their faculty and staff who teach at USPAS sessions, and (3) by providing in-depth advice to the USPAS Director.
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) maintains the responsibility as the host laboratory for the USPAS and, in doing so, has responsibility for the day-to-day oversight of the USPAS operations through the USPAS Office, which remains the administrative entity for the USPAS.
The USPAS Director is appointed by the Fermilab Director for terms of four years (renewable). The USPAS Director is responsible for the performance of the USPAS activities and manages the USPAS Office and its staff.
The Director of USPAS will be a Half-Time position at Fermilab, and Fermilab will support this portion of the Director’s salary from DOE funds provided for this purpose. A suitable arrangement for joint support with the Director’s home institution will be developed, including the possibility of a Joint Appointment.
The Director of USPAS is expected to teach, develop, and manage the USPAS classes, and twice-a-year USPAS sessions, as well as maintain a substantial presence at the Fermilab office between the USPAS sessions. The USPAS-related travel expenses will be covered by USPAS.

• The USPAS Director is responsible for the performance of the USPAS activities, including the organization and execution of the semi-annual schools and management of the USPAS Office and its staff at Fermilab.
• The USPAS Office performs all USPAS business functions, including Office operations, program operations, budget and finance management and accountability, marketing, external affairs, and program development, consistent with the field work proposals (FWPs) approved by the Office of High Energy Physics, the Fermilab Site Office, and Fermilab institutional requirements.
• The USPAS Director establishes the curriculum and recruits the faculty for the schools. The Director is responsible for the quality of the education provided and its relevance to the USPAS Member Institutions.
• The Director is assisted by the USPAS Advisory Council, appointed by the USPAS Director. The Council provides advice to the USPAS Director on course curricula and syllabi, recommended instructors, proposed locations, etc.
• The performance of the USPAS director and the effectiveness of the school is reviewed on an annual basis by the USPAS Institutional Board, consisting of Lab Directors (or their designees) and Vice Presidents of Research (or their designees) of the USPAS member institutions and chaired by the Fermilab Director’s Designee.
Qualifications and Essential Job Functions
• Ph.D in particle physics, accelerators, accelerator technology, or associated engineering with 20+ years of experience design, construction, operations, management, or technology in the accelerator field.
• 10+ years of experience in teaching science or technology, or managing the teaching of science or technology, at the college or university course level.
• Demonstrated ability to run a small project or business at the ~$1.5 M per year (or larger) scope.
