The Max Planck Institute for Physics invites applications for a
focused on R&D in connection with a new Axion Dark Matter search experiment, MADMAX. This opening is part of the newly founded Collaborative Research Center CRC 1258 „Neutrinos and dark matter in astro and particle physics”.
Axions are prime candidates to explain the Dark Matter problem of the universe. Their existence is independently predicted by Peccei Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking to explain the strong CP problem.
MADMAX is a new experimental approach to search for Dark Matter axions with a mass around 100μeV, a mass range favoured by a class of theoretical models. The new approach makes use of the idea of a magnetized dish in connection with dielectric layers that boost the axion to photon conversion to a detectable rate.
The successful candidate is expected to take over a leading role in the design, development and implementation of important parts of the experimental infrastructure, such as the dielectric haloscope and the radiometer. The candidate is expected to actively participate in joint activities of the CRC.
Formal requirements for this position are a PhD in experimental physics, astronomy or a closely related field. The candidate should have a background in experimental (astro-) particle physics, experimental cosmology or microwave technology.
Salary and benefits are commensurate with public service organizations (TVöD Bund). The contract is initially limited to 2 years with the possibility of an extension.
