NGACDT Careers Workshop 21-23 Sept
The NGACDT (www.ngacdt.ac.uk
) are organising a residential careers workshop at Burn House in Montrose, Aberdeenshire (www.goodenough.ac.uk/the-burn) between the 21st and 23rd of September 2014. This event is aimed at PhD students in the sciences, the following events will take place:
- Talks on careers and opportunities from speakers from industry and research (speakers to be confirmed)
- Group activity* - presentation on topic to be decided - concentration on persuading the audience
- Individual activity* - short presentation on non academic topic - concentration on presentation skills
- Individual activity - mock interviews with speakers & staff - for experience
- Group activity - mock interviews with other students - experience of both sides of the table, a little less formal than those with speakers/staff
- A session on writing CVs and cover letters
- Group activity* - Treasure hunt - using team work to follow a set of clues which will be placed around the grounds in order to achieve a final goal
- Traditional whiskey tasting and ceilidh dancing (optional)
A few places are open to PhD students in the sciences, attending student fields include accelerator physics, laser plasma physics, radiobiology, medical imaging and electronic engineering. All attending students are required only to bring with them a CV aimed at industry/academia/research, as they are inclined. Prizes will be awarded for the student(s) that meet each starred activity brief most suitably.
The Burn is a 20 minute taxi ride from Montrose station if you wish to take the train, travel advice is given on the above website. The group shall arrive at around 15:00 on Sunday 21st Sept (talks will start at 16:00), and will leave at around 13:00 on Tuesday 23rd. A free coach service will leave Strathclyde University in Glasgow on Sunday at ~12:30, and shall return on Tuesday at ~13:00.
This opportunity is offered at cost: room & board for 2 nights at a total of £120, plus the cost of travel to The Burn. Funded PhD students should look to pay for this event using their research budget where possible.
